CareFusion Launches New Application to Capture Infusion Data to Support Accurate Billing

AlarisĀ® Infusion Viewer for Charge Capture Helps Minimize Lost Charges in Areas Where Recording Actual Time of IV Administration is Necessary

SAN DIEGO, Dec. 9, 2013 – CareFusion (NYSE:CFN), a leading global medical technology company, today announced a new software application for its line of Alaris® System intelligent infusion pumps that captures infusion data to support accurate billing and improved reimbursement opportunities.

The Alaris® Infusion Viewer for Charge Capture automatically records the start and stop time, infusion type and order of every infusion being administered through an Alaris® Pump or Syringe module in a hospital or health system, as well as other required data for outpatient billing to private or public payors. The infusion data is tied to specific patients and can be used to facilitate decisions in assigning proper billing codes, specifically enabling hospitals to adhere to guidelines from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services outpatient prospective payment system.

In most hospitals, outpatient nurses are required to keep track of the start and stop times for all IV infusions, as well as the complexity of the infusion. This manual process is an extra administrative burden on the nursing staff and leads to less time for patient care. Manual tracking also often leads to missing documentation required for proper reimbursement and can become subject to audit review from various payors and regulatory agencies.

Charge Capture is a web-based application that is used within the billing and coding department focused on outpatient and observation services within a hospital or health system’s finance function. The web interface displays data that is sent wirelessly from the Alaris System in near real-time[i]. The system takes the infusion pump data from across a hospital or health system and simplifies it into a more user-friendly format for coders, billers and outpatient nurses. The dashboard can create reports that show the entire infusion history for each patient in both a graphical timeline and tabular format, which can be exported and/or printed. The data is stored for up to 120 days to assist in retrospective reporting.

Charge Capture is the second application CareFusion has launched on its Alaris Infusion Viewer Suite platform. Alaris® Infusion Viewer for Pharmacy Logistics was launched in December 2012 and shows near real-time* status of every infusion administered via the Alaris Pump and Syringe modules to improve pharmacy workflow and infusion preparation and management.
